If you’re redecorating a room, or remodeling your house, there are all kinds of interior decorating ideas you can use to bring a little extra zest into a room. For example, these 5 interior decorating ideas can help you plan out a new room, or an entire home.
- Mood: Fear not the use of color! Setting the mood in your home has a lot to do with the color scheme you decide on. Yellow rooms are going to have a very different feeling than dark green or blue rooms. Take a look at your furniture pieces, knick-knacks and artwork, and consider what color could bring them all together. If you have a lot of orange, it’s probably a bad call to paint your walls orange. Creating a mood with color is effective, but don’t go overboard.
- Accent Pieces: If you’ve taken a look at all your decorating items, and realize that everything pretty much blends together, you might want to invest in a couple of accent pieces that will really stand out. An accent piece could be anything from a unique ottoman to an antique vase. Find something that compliments the room you’re decorating, but also draws the eye to it. It’ll bring a spark of life to a room.
- Organization: De-cluttering is the first step on the road to organization. Everybody tends to hold on to stuff, and it can accumulate in your home, and start to make things feel stifled. Of course there are certain mementos and memorabilia that have emotional importance, but there are some items that we just have. Clothing, cookware, knick-knacks, even books can start to build up and just take up space. Take a fresh look at your shelves and tabletops – there should be about 10% – 15% of free space
- Flow: While making each room in your home stand out is really exciting, take care that you don’t get carried away. It could be a little jarring to walk into the living room from the foyer, and think you’re in another house. Color is an easy way to do this – in fact, as a general tip, it’s probably safe never to use much more than 4 colors in an entire house, and using the same color trim throughout the house. It’s also a good idea to connect the “styles” you use in each of your rooms. Going from mid-century modern in one room to bohemian eclectic can make a home feel disjointed. Try combining styles in one room to make the whole house flow smoothly.
- Lighting: With the right lighting, you can change the feeling in just about any room. If you have a dark room, add a few more warm lights. If you’re putting in a new kitchen, try using several levels of lighting, like under-cabinet lights over the counters, and up-lights on top of cabinets to add a warm glow to the room. Generally speaking, having three light sources in one room will help create a more comfortable, friendly ambiance.
If you’re strapped for interior decorating ideas, these should help out. Be sure to experiment with what works best for your home, and what you personally prefer – it could be that you love stark white walls and wild accessories and furniture, or that you crave Spartan scarceness throughout your home. Interior decorating ideas should always be built around styles that you really love.
