If you have bought a property in Barcelona and live abroad, how can you quickly and easily furnish the apartment? It can be time consuming and take a lot of energy furnishing your property, especially if you do not speak the language very well and are unfamiliar with the city. Here we attempt to guide you in the best ways to get this job out of the way, whilst making sure your new apartment feels homely.
For things like beds, tables, chairs and sofa´s, the most popular choice is, you guessed it, IKEA. The IKEA range is pretty much the same as the rest of europe, and whilst lacking slightly in originality, it is a great place to get the basics. You can get most of what you need in one visit, then have it delivered for a small additional price. There are two large IKEAS in Barcelona, one in Badalona, and one on Gran Via at the other end of the city.
If you visit the IKEA in Badalona, you may want to check out some of the other furniture shops in the same shopping area, such as Conforama, who do reasonably priced furniture if you want something different from IKEA, and some of the furniture shops just behind IKEA that sell Sofas, made to order.
For things like TVs, washing machines, fridges and the like, try MediaMarkt. It has everything under one roof, with good prices, and is a well known brand. There are several large stores in some of the shopping malls in Barcelona, the largest being at Diagonal Mar near the Forum. Places like Carrefour also do good priced appliances, and is also a great place to pick up homeware accessories
For the little things such as plates, cutlery, place mats, lamps and so on, IKEA is the obvious, albeit unoriginal choice, with Carrefour also having well priced stuff. For something a bit less predictable you can try Zara Home, on Rambla de Catalunya, or Casa Viva on the same street. For something a bit unique and original, you can try trawling the many antique and speciality shops in the Gothic quarter of Barcelona, or one of the many small decorations and accessory shops in Gracia, especially around Calle Verdi.
