spanish-tourismmm The National Statistics Institute released its monthly results this week, and in March of this year, the Spanish hotel industry recorded 17.4 million overnight stays, which is a decrease of 3.5% compared to that of last year, plus on average the nightly rate was reduced by 0.3% to help combat the difference.

Further indications were also seen in the Spanish hotel occupancy rate, which was 44.6% in March, a decrease of 3.8% over the same month last year and this trend continued over the weekend occupancy which declined by 7.7% from the same period the year before to 49.3%.

There are a number of reasons why there has been a decline, the first being that there has been a drop in Spanish tourists (3.1%), as well international tourists (3.8%) staying in hotels. Some of these travelers have now opted for more affordable vacation apartments then hotels, where the cost per person, per night in same case is cheaper than a hostel. Also, due to economic pressures, the average stay has also been reduced, with a 3% decrease, giving a projected 3 nights stay per traveler.

With the majority of travelers coming from the United Kingdom (20.9%) and Germany (27.7%), there was an increase in British overnight stays by 2.1%, but the German sector decreased by 4%.

France, Italy and Sweden fell 8.3%, 23.3% and 1.7% respectively, but it was the Canary Islands that was the main destination for non-residents and saw a total overnight stay increase of 7.2%. Catalonia followed as the next most popular Spanish tourist destination with Andalusia in third.

For local travelers, it was Andalusia, Valencia and Catalonia that were the main destinations of choice in Spain, despite all recording decreases of 4.1%, 1.6% and 5.3% respectively.

Statistics released from the Hotel Price Index (HPI) revealed that the average cost per room was 66.90 Euros, with a profit per room standing at an average of 33.40 Euros.

However, on further investigations, it was revealed that touristic apartments maintained a strong market share, where in some cases availability was exhausted during the month of March. According to one of the leading Barcelona vacation apartment agencies, things could not be better and they are actively search for additional stock to cater to the demand.
