The amount of people traveling has been growing over the past few decades, and the reasons vary from business engagements, to shopping trips. Barcelona, one of the leading commercial and business centers of the Western Europe, has seen a huge number of travelers visiting the city during the entire year.

Since the need for staying in Barcelona increased, so has the offer of types of rental offered on the Barcelona’s real estate market. Nowadays, the market of apartments and houses to rent in Barcelona is so big that it gives a huge selection of different types of accommodation, suitable for different types of travelers and visits. In this sense, the type of rentals that has been emerging recently is middle term rentals.

What are middle term rentals?

For a while now we had short term rentals, required by people spending a short period of time in the city usually for a short trip or a seminar. This type of rental is usually the most popular type of accommodation during the summer months and around Christmas. The stay would typically last from one to couple of days, sometimes even a week. We also had long term rentals, for those planning to spend a longer time period in Barcelona, which would sometimes turn into an indefinite stay. Now we have middle term rentals Barcelona, which can range anywhere from three weeks to six months. A stay less than three weeks would be considered a short stay, while anything more than six months we will categorize as long term stay.

Who needs this type of rentals?

When we define middle term rentals, we are not guided by the type of visit, only by its duration. This means that people may be in the city for many different reasons when renting this type of property. The purpose the visit may vary from visitor to visitor, but what they all have in common is the fact that they will be spending more than three weeks and less than six months in the city. Here are some reasons why one would consider middle term rentals:

  • Internship
  • Language course
  • Consultancy
  • Study abroad opportunity
  • Seminar
  • Workshops
  • Prolonged holiday

As you can see, people traveling for pleasure and for work are equally interested in middle term rentals in Barcelona. During their stay, they will have a lot of benefits from renting an apartment than they would if they were to stay in a hotel. Additionally, the costs of a monthly rental are much cheaper than the costs of staying in a hotel during the same period of time, which is another reason why choosing rentals is more advisable option, especially when it comes to middle term stay.

Where to find middle term rentals in Barcelona?

When traveling to Barcelona, one of the first things you will need to think about is where to find middle terms rentals. Regardless if you have already visited the city and you know the scenery pretty well, or if you are first-time visitors, and you feel clueless when looking for accommodation, thinking about location is very important aspect. It will have a great influence on your stay, so make sure you have enough time to consider these factors and make your decision is based on the detailed thinking about each of them.

In order to explain how to find rentals in Barcelona, we will show you how to gradually narrow down your search and come to the solution you will be satisfied with. We will use location as the main criteria, but other requirements will be incorporated as well, so that the choice you make in the end is really something that truly matches you need and enables you to have a perfect stay in Barcelona.

Choose a district

The city of Barcelona is divided into 10 districts. Those districts are:

  • Ciutat Vella
  • Eixample
  • Sants-Montjuïc
  • Les Corts
  • Sarrià-Sant Gervasi

  • Sant Martí

When you plan on living in Barcelona, you should start by exploring each district and choosing the one where you would like to find an apartment. This is the first step in the process of finding the location, as browsing apartments all around the city will be futile. Choose one or two districts where you would like to live, and focus your search on those.

Make a decision based on your current situation. For example, if you will be attending workshops in the city, you might want to consider staying in a districts where the workshops will be held, to make it easier for you to attend them. If you are going to be an intern in a company, find out where the company’s offices are, and choose that district as your starting point. This kind of approach is great for making your stay as convenient as possible. Another thing that might be affecting the decision of choosing the district are the costs. Have in mind that central districts are usually more costly, with rental prices being more competitive, while more affordable living arrangements can be found in the other districts. The situation is the same with the coastal area. While living next to the beach might be a dream come true, the costs of living will be a bit higher. Consider all of these aspects when making a selection.

Choose a neighborhood

Having chosen one or two districts, it is time to narrow down the search even more. The next step is choosing the neighborhood. Each district of Barcelona is divided into several neighborhoods, anywhere from 4 to 10.

When choosing the neighborhood, you should think about the same factors like with districts. Convenient location is the one that is closer to the office, univeristy, etc. However, living in the same district is convenient enough, you do not necessarily have to live in the same neighborhood. Instead, try focusing on other factors when choosing a neighborhood.

Start by reflecting on your current lifestyle. Here are a couple of questions that might help you with that:

  • Do you go jogging in the morning?
  • Do you go to the gym after work?
  • Or do you prefer swimming?
  • Do you maybe like to eat Italian or Chinese food?
  • Do you like to go out for dinner, or do you prefer ordering food?
  • Do you like living in an apartment or in a house?

All of this affects the choice of neighborhood. For example, if you love swimming, you will probably choose a neighborhood with a local swimming pool. On the other hand, if a house is what you are looking for when thinking about middle term rentals in Barcelona, check out the neighborhood with more houses instead the one where apartments are dominant. Also, if you love jogging in the morning or enjoying a relaxing walk after work, make sure you choose a neighborhood where there is a park. It is a good idea to make a sort of a list of the things you need in your vicinity, and once you have that list, you will be able to explore the neighborhoods of the districts you have selected in order to find the one that matches your criteria best. This way you narrow down the search by focusing on one or two neighborhoods where you will be going on an apartment hunt.

Find an apartment

Having narrowed down your search significantly, from districts to neighborhood, you now have a certain territory you will need to consider. Although pretty narrowed down, this territory is not small, so the process of finding an apartment for middle term stay is still complex.

You should reflect on your lifestyle once again, but this time, make sure you go a bit deeper. Think about all of those habits you have and all the things you could not imagine your life without. It may be a terrace where you like to relax, or perhaps you cannot go without having a microwave. It may be a garage for your car, or you might really need an air conditioning in the apartment. You might need a pet-friendly building. Perhaps, you want a spacious apartment, or you might want one with lots of natural lighting.

To make a decision that will truly be satisfying, try putting down all of these requirements and desires, regardless how small or petty they might seem. All of this can help when browsing through the selection of apartments in a specific location, because you will focus your search only on those apartments that really match your requirements. In order not to forget something, it is always best to put down everything that might be important for the apartment hunt.

Unlike with short stays, where you do not necessarily have to be so selective when choosing an apartment, because in reality you will be living there for only a couple of days, the situation with middle term rentals is different. As we have stated above, middle term stay may range anywhere from three weeks to six months. This is a lot of time to be living in a rental that you do not really like. No matter if you are going to live in Barcelona because of work and professional development, or you are a traveler who wants to get to know the city a bit better, you will be in a situation to call Barcelona your new temporary home. Therefore, it is natural to live in a place where you will also feel like home.

Since middle term stay is limited to six months, you do not want to make a bad choice and to end up moving several times during that time. This would be very inconvenient, and it might take you precious time you could spend enjoying the city or working on your professional development. This is why it is of essence to find a rental you will really be happy with, so that your stay, no matter how long, is enjoyable. Just imagine coming home to your apartment, stressed out and tired from an exhausting day. It would help if you could come to a nice, cozy apartment where you feel relaxed, wouldn’t it?
